What we're building

A local-first music player for people who care how their music sounds. Your files, your devices — played back exactly as recorded, with every processing step visible and optional. No hidden resampling, no streaming lock-in, no guesswork.

Not a streaming front-end — Echobox plays the music you already own, by design.

What you get

FLACDSDALACWavPackAPEWAVAIFFAACOGGOpusMP3 + more

Lossless and hi-res first — every other format too.

Your library

Your music, your files, your way. Echobox builds a rich, searchable library from the music you already own — with gapless playback, artwork, and support for every format that matters.

Listen anywhere

One app that reaches every speaker, DAC, and screen in your life. From Bluetooth headphones to network receivers, Echobox adapts to the output you're using.

Your sound

By default, Echobox changes nothing — bit-perfect, straight through. When you want to, shape playback to match your ears, your room, and your gear. Every tool here is optional and fully bypassable.

What makes it different

Every bit, exactly as recorded

Your music plays back exactly as it was recorded. No hidden processing, no unwanted conversions — just a clean path from file to speaker. This is the default — not a mode you turn on.

How it works

A custom audio engine built from the ground up for every device you own. The result is bit-perfect output, gapless playback, and automatic sample rate matching — your hardware gets exactly the signal it was designed for.

See everything. Guess nothing.

Most players are a black box. Echobox shows you exactly what's happening at every step — what's being processed, what's being changed, and what's passing through untouched.

How it works

A live view of your entire playback chain: what format you're playing, which processing stages are active, how your output device is configured, and whether your audio is passing through unaltered. If something changes your sound, you'll see it.

Know what you're actually listening to

Your collection tells a story beyond artist and album. Echobox analyzes every track so you can spot the best-sounding releases, compare masters, and understand what you're really hearing.

How it works

Every track gets analyzed: loudness levels, peak volume, dynamic range scoring, and clipping detection. Compare the 1987 CD master to the 2019 remaster. Spot low-quality files hiding in your collection. Your library has stories — Echobox helps you read them.

One app, every output you own

Headphones, speakers, Bluetooth, USB — Echobox remembers your preferences for each and automatically applies the right settings when you switch.

How it works

Speakers, headphones, Bluetooth, USB audio devices, Chromecast, and network players. Each output remembers its own sound profile — different EQ for your headphones than your speakers, different settings for wireless than wired. Set it once, forget it.

Optional tuning — only when you ask

Bit-perfect by default. When you choose to, fine-tune with EQ, headphone correction, and room correction — every stage independent and fully bypassable. Nothing touches your audio unless you turn it on.

How it works

Off by default. When enabled, seven independent stages — volume normalization, preamp gain, 20-band precision EQ, headphone spatial processing, volume control, 10-band graphic EQ, and a safety limiter. Load correction profiles for your room or headphones. Turn any stage on or off independently, or leave the whole chain bypassed for a pure signal path.

More than a music player

Echobox is built as a modular platform. Enable the features you want — audiobooks, recording, audiophile tools, speaker integrations — and disable what you don't.

How it works

The add-on system lets you tailor Echobox to the way you use it. Each add-on brings its own navigation, settings, and capabilities. Enable audiobook support when you need it. Turn on the audiophile toolkit for deep analysis and DSP control. Add SoundTouch speaker management or quick audio recording. Everything stays clean because you choose what's active.

Where and when

Q3 2025

Prototyping

Complete
Layered audio architecture

Three dedicated layers — a realtime audio engine, a playback state machine, and a native UI — designed for glitch-free audio from day one.

First playback engine

Real file decoding with WAV and MP3. Stable realtime output through a purpose-built audio buffer.

Glitch-free audio path

The entire realtime audio path runs without memory allocation, contention, or logging. No compromises where it matters most.

Seek & transport controls

Pause, resume, and seek to any position with sub-50ms accuracy. Instant response, no glitches.

Playback state machine

Strict state transitions with invalid-state protection. Every edge case handled before it reaches the UI.

Automated stress testing

Pause/resume spam, random seeks, 60-minute endurance runs — validated before a single user hears it.

Q4 2025

Core Engine

Complete
Library & metadata system

Local music scanning, fast local database, playlists, and full metadata extraction.

Audio enhancements

Gapless playback, crossfade, 10-band EQ, ReplayGain, and a DSP processing chain.

Bit-perfect & hi-res audio

24-bit/192kHz playback with automatic sample-rate switching. Bypass all DSP for pure signal integrity.

Background playback & media controls

Platform audio integration

Native audio backends on every platform — WASAPI exclusive mode on Windows, plus native macOS and Android audio — no wrappers, no compromises.

Performance & stability

Underrun recovery, buffer monitoring, memory auditing, and a headless stress-test suite for CI.

WASAPI exclusive mode

Bypasses the Windows audio mixer entirely. Bit-perfect output straight to your hardware.

ALSA & PipeWire native

Direct integration with Linux audio subsystems. No wrappers, no extra latency — just raw hardware access.
